If AEO sounds a bit like SEO with a new coat of paint, that is fair.
There is overlap.
A lot of the same basics still matter: a clear website, accurate information, useful content, good business details, and a site search systems can crawl and understand.
But there is still an important difference.
SEO is mainly about helping your business appear in search results.
AEO is about helping your business be found, understood, cited, and sometimes recommended inside AI-generated answers.
That does not make one more important than the other. It means they are not exactly the same job anymore.
What stays the same?
For a local business, the foundation still matters.
- a clear website
- accurate service pages
- good location information
- consistent business details
- useful content
- strong business profiles
- a technically healthy site
If your website is thin, confusing, or outdated, neither SEO nor AEO gets easier. That is why AEO is not a replacement for SEO. It builds on it.
What actually changes?
The biggest change is the kind of question being answered.
With SEO, someone might search: garage door repair ajax
And the goal is to appear well in search results.
With AEO, the same person might ask: Who near me can fix my garage door?
Now the system may generate an answer instead of simply returning a list of links.
That answer might mention businesses, summarize services, cite sources, or recommend one or two options directly.
So instead of only asking Did we rank? you also have to ask:
- Were we mentioned?
- Were we described correctly?
- Were we cited?
- Was a competitor recommended instead?
- Did the AI understand what we actually do?
That is the extra layer AEO adds.
SEO helps you appear. AEO asks how you appear.
That is probably the simplest way to explain it.
SEO focuses on visibility in search results. AEO looks at visibility inside answers.
If someone searches Google for a local plumber, they may see map listings, service pages, directories, reviews, and company websites. That is familiar search behaviour.
But if someone asks an AI tool Who can come look at why my furnace is not working anymore? the system may produce a direct answer based on what it understands from different sources.
Your business may be missing, mentioned, cited, recommended, or described incorrectly. That is where AEO becomes useful.
A local example
Let’s use a garage door company.
Someone asks: Who near me can fix my garage door?
Traditional SEO is concerned with whether the company appears in search results, local maps, and relevant listings.
AEO asks:
- Does the AI mention the business?
- Does it understand that the company handles garage door repair?
- Does it know the service area?
- Does it describe the business accurately?
- Does it cite a useful source?
- Does it surface competitors instead?
That is a different layer of visibility. And it matters because some customers are now building their shortlist from an AI answer before they ever click a website.
AEO is not just SEO for ChatGPT
That shortcut is catchy, but it misses too much.
AEO is not about chasing one platform. It is about understanding how your business is interpreted across AI-powered search and answer systems more broadly.
That includes:
- whether the business can be found
- whether the information is accurate
- whether the right services are understood
- whether the location is understood
- whether useful sources are connected to the business
- whether competitors are being surfaced instead
SEO is part of the picture. AEO is a wider visibility question.
Why this matters for local businesses
Local businesses do not need another buzzword. They do need to know whether customers can still find them as search behaviour changes.
If people are asking:
- Who can I go to for my company’s taxes?
- What are my mechanic’s holiday hours?
- Who in Ajax can build an AI receptionist for our business?
then businesses need to know what happens next. Not in theory. In actual answers.
That is why AEO matters. It gives you a way to measure that newer layer of visibility instead of guessing.
Where businesses get this wrong
Usually in one of two ways.
The first mistake is assuming strong SEO automatically solves everything. Sometimes it helps a lot. Sometimes AI still misunderstands the business or surfaces someone else.
The second mistake is treating AEO like a magic trick. It is not.
There is no honest rank me in ChatGPT button. There is no guarantee that an AI system will recommend a particular business.
AEO is more practical than that. It is about improving clarity, consistency, useful information, and the signals surrounding the business, then checking how AI systems respond.
Start with the visibility question
For most local businesses, SEO still matters and AI visibility now matters too.
The goal is not to choose one side. It is to understand how traditional search visibility and AI visibility are working together, and where the gaps are.
If you want to know whether your business is showing up in AI-generated answers, the first step is measuring what is happening now.
Our AI Visibility Audit looks at how your business appears across relevant AI platforms, whether the information is accurate, which competitors are being surfaced, what sources are influencing the answers, and where the most obvious visibility gaps are.
If the question is What is happening? start there.
If the question becomes Why is it happening, and what should change? that is where the Complete AEO Audit goes deeper.
