There is no single switch called “AI ranking”
AI systems may draw from websites, search engines, business profiles, reviews, directories, authoritative third-party sources, structured information and other publicly available signals.
Clear websites are necessary, but not always sufficient
A business can have an excellent website and still be difficult for AI to understand. It can also be well known locally while competitors appear more consistently in AI-generated answers.
AI systems do not all retrieve information in the same way, and their sources and answers can change. That is why a useful audit records the platform, prompt, result and cited evidence instead of making one broad claim about “AI rankings.”
What clarity looks like
Useful signals consistently describe who the business is, what it does, where it operates and why it is relevant to a customer’s question. When those facts are missing, contradictory or poorly supported, AI systems have less reliable information to work with.
